Root Canal

What is a root canal? When a tooth has been diagnosed with an irreversible condition by your dentist at ThoroughDent Smiles, a root canal may be utilized to avoid tooth removal. A root canal involves obtaining anesthesia or “numbness” in the area, removing the cavity or decay from the tooth and cleaning out the tooth from bacteria and debris. During this time, multiple medicaments may be used to help the cleaning process inside the tooth. After reshaping and cleaning the inside of the tooth from bacteria, a filling process is used from the inside of the tooth to the outside to restore back to original function and cosmetic value. Most commonly, the inside of the tooth is filled with an inert substance that allows the body to ignore the previous damage. Then, a special filling called a “core” is placed to build up the tooth structure. Lastly, a crown is commonly utilized to cap the tooth and protect the remaining brittle tooth structure. The crown will be esthetic and functional like the original tooth. It is normal to have mild discomfort after this surgical procedure but your dentist will walk you thru each step to help you best avoid discomfort during the healing process.
