Celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month With ThoroughDent Smiles

National Dental Hygiene MonthOctober is National Dental Hygiene Month, and we love any opportunity to educate our patients further about the importance of dental health. Since many of us will be eating some of our favorite candies this month during the Halloween season, it is incredibly important to maximize your dental health at home.

At our Georgetown dental clinic, we believe in simple, consistent dental hygiene habits to ensure a healthy smile. Below, our team shares our recommendations for how you should be taking care of your teeth at home.

Oral Health Routine at Home

After taking care of your teeth on a routine basis for decades, it is easy to forget how to correctly optimize your dental health. Today on the blog, our Georgetown KY dentist wanted to start with the basics.

Brushing

Brushing your teeth twice a day is the perfect way to clean your teeth while fighting against plaque and food particles. Cleaning your teeth regularly also helps prevent cavities and gingivitis. Our team recommends brushing twice a day (as a minimum) and every time after you eat anything sugary or sticky. With Halloween right around the corner, it is imperative to really clean your teeth after eating cavity to reduce the risk of any leftover bacteria developing in your mouth.

When brushing your teeth this month, we challenge you to watch the time. At a minimum, one is supposed to brush their teeth for two minutes at a 45-degree angle. We often hear from patients that they are often so busy in their day-to-day lives that they forget this step.

Toothbrush bristles get weak and flat after continued use. If you can’t remember the last time you changed your toothbrush, this is a sign to change your toothbrush now! For general health reasons, our team recommends changing your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.

Flossing

Floss, floss, floss! This is the best way to ensure that your mouth remains healthy and you take optimal care of your pearly whites. Flossing gets all the small spots your toothbrush may have missed, cleaning in between all of your teeth. Our family dentist Georgetown KY strongly urges our patients to make it a habit to floss at least once per day.

Rinsing

Though many people think rinsing with a mouthwash is an optional step, our dental team recommends adding this into your daily routine. Rinsing your mouth with a mouthwash is another great way to remove plaque, bacteria, and more. Like brushing and flossing, mouth washing is another great preventative step that helps fight against gingivitis and gum disease. Another added perk of mouthwash is that it freshens your breath!

Chewing

You may be shocked to learn that not all chewing gum is bad for you! In fact, it’s quite the opposite. We asked our friend, Dr. Ben Kacos, Shreveport dentist, his opinion on chewing gum. He explains that chewing sugar-free gum after meals can help clear the food out of your mouth. In addition, it increases production in saliva, which also helps with your overall dental health by washing away acids and leftover bacteria.

Seeing Your Georgetown Dentist

In addition to optimizing your oral health at home, our Georgetown dentists recommend coming in every six months for a cleaning. By seeing your dentist regularly, you are ensuring that your teeth stay clean and healthy. Your Georgetown KY dentist can help you with your specific oral health and evaluate your mouth each visit for early signs of gum disease. Schedule a dental cleaning with us today.
